Suzie (RIP), Zoe, Luna, Waylon, Butter and Ayla are some of the dogs who keep us company throughout the entire Suzie’s process, from helping plant, grow and harvest our hemp, to manufacturing CBD oils and treats for pets. Seeing our dogs bounce with playfulness and joy inspires us to do this work. Happy snouts make us happy!

When Our Dogs Are Unhappy…

Sometimes, our four-legged family can be less cheerful than expected. Dogs can suffer from anxiety, separation and feel stressed when their loved ones leave for work or go out without them. Other dogs get stressed with loud noises, bangs, and fireworks. Dogs may also suffer from occasional digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. Some dogs feel nauseous during travel. Car-sickness is a common obstruction to happy traveling.

Additionally, dogs can suffer from joint pains and mobility problems, with one out of four dogs in the United States suffering from arthritis-related problems [1]. Painful joints and inflammation make it difficult for dogs to get up and enjoy their walks and adventures outdoors.

Finally, and no matter how much we want our dogs to live forever, old age is inevitable. Senior dogs may require health support for better wellness and more comfortable living.

…CBD Is Our Natural Partner

How Does CBD Work For Dogs?

Dogs, just like humans, have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for keeping the body in balance. Among other things, it is tasked with regulating appetite, mood, motor perception, inflammation, and pain perception.

When a function is out of sync, the ECS alerts the body by releasing endocannabinoids—cannabinoids produced by the body. These cannabinoids attach to receptors that tell cells to start fixing the problem.

How does CBD interact with this complex sequence of tasks? Since CBD found in plants is structured so similarly to the cannabinoids that are naturally produced within the dog’s body, CBD can interact with the ECS in a beneficial way to make the whole system work more effectively.

The Endocannabinoid System of Dogs

Dogs have been found to have more cannabinoid receptors in the brain than humans [3]. This suggests that their ECS is highly active in their brain. When dogs take CBD for anxiety, for instance, the cannabinoid receptors in their brain may be highly responsive to a smaller dose of CBD to help them feel better.

The ECS also regulates pain and inflammation, both of which can be linked to several painful conditions. When CBD interacts with the ECS, the CBD may help fend off inflammation and the pain and discomfort it may cause.

Anxiety, stress, depression, and phobias are other common issues that decrease our dogs’ quality of life. For example, if your dog is hiding under the bed during the 4th of July celebrations, CBD for dogs may help. Thanks to its synergy with the endocannabinoid system, CBD may help brain neurotransmitters interact more effectively with serotonin and dopamine to reduce anxiety.

Benefits of CBD for Dogs

CBD may stimulate your dog’s physical health and offer mental health support, especially with aging, mobility problems, and joint pain.

CBD may also help dogs suffering from phobias, anxiety, and depression. Dogs that come from shelters or abusive homes, in particular, often display mental distress. CBD may help support them as they recover and get accustomed to their new life.

Additionally, CBD may support healthy fur and skin, which is particularly helpful with dogs suffering from allergies.

Finally, dogs with digestive problems may also benefit from CBD.

As a 2018 study [4] concluded, “The most commonly used CBD formulations were oil/extract and edibles. These were most helpful in providing analgesia for chronic and acute pain, relieving anxiety and decreasing seizure frequency/severity.”

CBD Dosage for Dogs

Current studies show that CBD is safe and well-tolerated by dogs. Even in doses of 60 mg/kg—twenty times the usual dose—, the most common side-effect is sedation. [5].

As a guideline , CBD dosage for dogs depends on your dog’s weight and its overall health state.

It is generally wise to “start low, go slow”: start with a low, twice daily dosage and let CBD work its way through your dog’s system over several days. If you don’t reach your expected health target, you can slowly increase the dosage. We suggest you take notes of how your dog reacts to CBD and write down the effects until you find what works best for your pet.

We recommend starting with 1 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. One mg per 10 lbs is a conservative amount and can be adjusted as needed. An average dosage is estimated to be 1-2 mg of CBD per day per 10 pounds.

In order to have the CBD remain in your dog's system constantly , we recommend splitting up the dosage by giving your four-legged friend small quantities of CBD throughout the day. For example, if your dog weighs 40 pounds, you can divide their 4 mg serving into two doses of 2 mg each.

CBD Side Effects on Dogs

A minority of dogs may display mild side effects from CBD. These may include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness. If your dog experiences any side effects, the first thing you should do is make sure you have bought your CBD from a trusted source.

The second thing you can try is to lower the dosage to let the body assimilate smaller quantities of CBD.

CBD is non-psychoactive: your dog will not get addicted to it. CBD is generally well-tolerated and the body quickly adapts to its presence, mainly because of CBD’s smooth interaction with the ECS. However, this process can take more time for some dogs than others. Try starting at a smaller dose for a week before increasing the dose slowly.

Frequently Asked Questions About CBD For Dogs

Can CBD for Dogs Help With Pain Management and Inflammation Reduction?

Studies have suggested that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for dogs suffering from conditions like arthritis and other joint problems. It can be a holistic and natural method to help your furry friend feel more comfortable and pain-free.

Can CBD Help My Dog With Anxiety and Stress Relief?

Like humans, dogs can also suffer from feelings of nervousness and stress. If your pet gets nervous during thunderstorms, car rides, or when left alone, CBD may be a good option to consider. It's believed that CBD can help manage these feelings by promoting relaxation and fostering a sense of calm, without the use of strong prescription medications.

How can CBD Help My Dog with Joint Health and Mobility?

Age, breed, and health conditions can affect a dog's mobility and joint health. Many owners have reported improvement in their pet's mobility and overall energy levels after using CBD regularly. This is attributed to its anti-inflammatory properties, which can potentially aid in easing discomfort and promoting better joint health.

Are There Any Side Effects If I Give My Dog CBD?

If your pet consumes a large amount of CBD, they may experience loose stools or lethargy. But generally, there are no adverse side effects when giving your pet their daily dose.

Should I Talk To a Vet Before Giving my Dog CBD?

At Suzie's Pet Treats, we always recommend you speak with a veterinarian to fully understand how CBD might affect your furry friend. This is especially true if your pet is on prescription medications. We recommend starting at a low dose, monitoring your pet's reaction and adjusting the dosage as necessary.

How Much CBD Should I Give My Dog?

Your dog’s weight is the main factor when determining the right dosage of CBD. A smaller dog will likely require a smaller dosage than a larger one. Other factors to consider include the dog's age, overall health, metabolism, and tolerance to CBD.

As a general rule, a common dosage range for dogs is 1 mg per 10 pounds of body weight, split into a morning and evening dose.

What's the Best CBD Product for My Dog?

We have many CBD products for dogs available, including CBD oil and CBD treats. CBD oil is often considered the quickest delivery method for administering CBD to dogs.

That said, CBD-infused treats can be a more enjoyable way for your pet to receive their CBD dosage.

Are CBD Treats and Oils the Same? Is One Better Than the Other?

When it comes to deciding between using treats and oils for your pet's CBD regimen, it really depends on the situation and the specific needs of your furry friend. Treats are perfect for less frequent situations when your pet may need some calming effects. They are also particularly useful for pets who have specific triggers that lead to anxiety, such as visiting the vet or experiencing loud noises from storms.

On the other hand, CBD oils are often recommended for long-term use to address chronic conditions like anxiety or arthritis, They offer sustained relief over an extended period of time when given daily as part of your pet's routine. While it may take a few weeks for the oil to build up in your pet's system and show noticeable improvements, they can provide consistent benefits once they do. Oils are a great choice for pet parents looking to manage ongoing health issues in their furry companions and provide them with lasting support and comfort. Ultimately, both treats and oils have their own unique benefits and can be used in conjunction with each other depending on your pet's individual needs.
