All animals with backbones have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining the body’s natural balance. The ECS controls mood, appetite, and pain perception, among many other functions. To do so, it works with cannabinoids and their respective receptors. When something is out of balance, the ECS releases cannabinoids to attach to their respective receptors and alert cells. 

CBD interacts with this endocannabinoid system in a gentle, indirect way. CBD shows great similarity to one of the ECS’s own cannabinoids. However, instead of working directly on the receptors, it seems to nudge the ECS to make better and more efficient use of its own cannabinoids.
